Q: What is the C-Walk?
A:The C-Walk can be two things, a dance in which fancy footwork is used to impress audiences or a gang affiliated ritual.
Q: What does the C stand for?
A:The C can stand for either Crip or Clown walk.
Q: Where and how did it originate from?
A: Originally, members of the Crips would use nimble movements of their feet to spell out their names or other Crips words (sometimes spelling out Bloods, the name of their rival gang, and then crossing it out). Many Crip gangs also use the C-Walk to celebrate the initiation of a new member. It is also believed that the C-walk was used as a warning, for example in the build-up to a robbery: The lookout would stand outside of the store and act as surveillance, while the robbers would await the signal—the C-walk. Typically performed to West Coast gangsta rap and G-funk, the C-Walk first hit the mainstream when rapper Ice-T performed it on stage in front of cameras in the late '80s. Later, rapper WC would follow suit and add to its popularity; however, he clearly let the public know that this was not a dance, as "gangstas don't dance, they boogie", and that it was only meant to show love to other Crip members. The C-Walk was censored in the video of Snoop Dogg's hit single "Drop It Like It's Hot".
Although the C-Walk has found mainstream appeal, Snoop Dogg rapped on a remix of fellow Crip WC's single "The Streets" that it is for Crip members exclusively. In recent years, it has inspired spinoffs such as the Clown Walk (also known as the C-Walk which brings in confusion) in another attempt at distancing the walk from its original gang ties—and the Bloods' own interpretation of it, called the Blood Walk or more commonly the Blood Bounce or B Walk.
Q: What is the difference between the Crip and Clown walk?
A: The Crip Walk is usually considered as the slower walk. The moves performed in the Crip Walk are for the most case, less flashy and technical then the Clown Walk. The Crip Walk has more of an emphasis placed on the laid-back style of the walk and the smooth execution of the moves in order to make a gang related statement. The primary focus of the Crip Walk is to represent your hood, area code, gangs etc. This can be achieved by using your hands and spelling out sets of words, area codes etc. The Crip Walk is not a dance, and is not intended to impress a crowd, it is a ritual performed for representing the specific gang. Moves which are commonly linked with the Crip Walk are the shuffles and V variations, although these moves may seem basic it takes a lot of time to become skilful. The Crip Walk has strong historic gang associations and could offend others.
The Clown Walk is a dance style, and primarily refers to footwork elements only. It is a mutation of the Crip Walk, taking the foundations of it and expanding them into a flashier, faster and more technical combinations. It has no gang affiliation and is used to impress an audience. Moves which are used in the Clown Walk and not the Crip Walk is that of the heel toe and the variations, as well as the X hop among others.
Ultimately what separates the Clown and Crip walk as well as the Blood Bounce is the absence of signs and other gestures symbolizing gang affiliations. Clown walking is often also referred to as C-Walking, because ‘Clowning’ coincidentally also starts with ‘C’ and can be abbreviated to ‘C-Walking’. Most people associated with either form of expression will clearly be able to set them apart as they are visually different.
